Introduction

Cryptocurrencies are digital or virtual tokens that use cryptography to secure their transactions and to control the creation of new units. Cryptocurrencies are decentralized, meaning they are not subject to government or financial institution control. Bitcoin, the first and most well-known cryptocurrency, was created in 2009.

Coinbase is a digital asset exchange company headquartered in San Francisco, California. It operates exchanges of bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and other digital assets with fiat currencies in 32 countries, and bitcoin transactions and storage in 190 countries worldwide.

What is a cryptocurrency wallet?

If you want to own cryptocurrency, you need a digital “wallet” to store it in. Cryptocurrency wallets come in many forms, but they all serve the same purpose: to allow you to store, receive, and send your digital currency. While most cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, can be stored on exchanges like Coinbase, it is not recommended to leave your cryptocurrency on an exchange long-term. This is because exchanges are susceptible to hacks, and if your cryptocurrency is stored on the exchange, it may be lost in the event of a hack. For this reason, it is recommended that you store your cryptocurrency in a wallet that you control.
